Well first of all, we are not Seasoned Veterans we are POKEMON MASTERS (Well I am. Not sure bout anyone else. They can god damn beat me first before I say otherwise)
I would have a number of things to say really. First would be know what team your running and what Pokemon you want. Best way to check out? Battle Simulators such as Pokemon Showdown. Give you a good glimpse into gameplay and what you could be doing. Further more, if you are going to use PS, check out Smogon as well for tactics on Pokemon you are using.
Try not to play a team that is made to win, but use a team of Pokemon you like the look of. For example, I used to play steel and Dark types, but my new team is a variety because of the different members.
If you do intend to get Ruby and such, try get a 3DS with one of the older games first, just so you can get into the flow, and develop a team.
If you want a more subtle way of doing things, just look through the Lore and such of the games, and find the Type and Pokemon that suit you best.
I will probs thing of more later.
Yeah.

Ignore everything Metal said (even if he says the same things as me). Choose the fire pokemon at the start of the game and win. Game is not hard and there are plenty of guides online
In the end use what Pokemon you like (do if you don't like the fire one don't take it). You'll need a Flying and Water one to put Surf (lets you cross water ingame) and Fly (fast travel) moves on. You should try get a core group of pokemon by the 4th Gym, and carry that same group all the way to the end without swapping many out - this way they are levelled up, you know how they work and you have a good selection of moves on them in time for the end game challenges (eg Elite 4)

Though you dont need those types specifally. Most Dragons fly and some non water types swim. I know Cru is going for Torchic the fire type.
I am running Treeko the Grass type.
And I will still win.

Yeah
You will burn in Menoths holy fire heathen!
Unfortunately Combuskion is my least favourite fire pokemon ever. I will be trying to get Cyndaquil at the first real town via Pokemon bank. Used Charmander this time round after all. Do you have a Cyndaquil on X Metal? If so gimme gimme gimme

Do I sense a rivalry in the making here?
Rivalry implies grudging respect and equality. Metal is merely an ant underneath my boot, whom I will set alite at the earliest opportunity. ^~
... which will probably be at Christmas - his Xmas present shall be to be redeemed by the fire of Menoths embrace ^^

Wait, we get fire and alcohol when you visit? Even I think that's a bad idea.
You get alcohol, I get fire. It will be a hilarious combination - especially if we give you spirits

Especially the original.
Ok Fuzz, as a real Pokemon masta, I'm gonna go ahead and tell ya to ignore everything those scrubs have told you
No, really.
You don't need to worry about that shit yet. For your first playthrough, just get things you like the look of - don't worry too much about balance or anything, though that is important. Really, when yoou're starting out you want to learn about the type matchups. Water beats fire, fire beats grass, dragon beats itself, etc. The best game to do that with is Fire red or Leafgreen, buuuuut those are out of the question. It's gonna be either trial and error or cheatsheets for that. A bit of common sense and logic goes a long way there.
Basically, for now, just try playing through and nailing the basics. Try and get something in your team to deal with every type (though realistically you can't counter every type), and try to keep them roughly the same level. When you've got that shit down, then we can go deeper.

Someone really should make a sitcom about this site...
It wouldn't legally be allowed to air, something about corrupting the minds of children and all that

Challenge accepted, come get me on Black
And I wouldn't want to be the guy writing that sitcom. That would involve trying to get a feel of the essence of Cru, Metal, Fuzzy, Dx, and JC...
Hell no.
