So with the release of the new space marines DLC, I couldn't help but wonder whether anyone had worked out the best playstyle for them?

My personal stance is as follows:

I initially disliked the space marines, I thought that pound for pound their cruisers were too underpowered, and even eldar armour seemed to make a mockery of them. However, I persuaded myself to give them a chance, and to take a look at what tactics might be effective with them:

  1. BOARDING - This is the single best feature of the space marine fleets. I suppose that vessels full to the brim with genetically enhanced superkillers should be feared. My play-style with the space marines lends to a heavy emphasis on boarding actions. Thunderhawks, and (once you have the perk installed) boarding torpedoes give the humble space marine cruiser a lot of potential boarding actions.
  2. SHIELDS - Considering that the lore states that a strike cruisers are more or less designed to simply get the space marines within their target range and then leave, shields are one of the most important upgrades. All of my strike cruisers are outfitted with both the shield recharge perk, and and the invulnerability perk - both of which really help the cruisers survive (especially against close ranged or hard hitting foes)
  3. FAVOURS - These are not cheap, and considering you can only have one of each it is important to ensure that you spend these perks wisely. I currently have a strike cruiser outfitter with the master of the forge upgrade, which gives the cruiser a new skill per level. This alone has turned the cruiser into a foe that is really hard to take down. The librarian upgrade is next on my list, giving a chance to force a mutiny on a targeted ship - possibly perfect for dealing with any of the hardest hitting elements of an opposing fleet

Still on the ledge about buying this game, probably gonna wait until the game is 100% done with no foreseeable major patches and see how people like it in that state before considering to buy it.

I picked the game up yesterday on the summer sale. Grabbed the SM DLC at the same time, will likely never use them as I almost always favour one single race which for TT was Chaos and likely will be for this game too.

That said, I hope the SMs in the campaign get some of the new ships and it isn't always going to be recoloured IN ships

How are you finding the game so far Cru? Chaos was the first race that I devoted my time to, and I think probably one of the best factions to play in game :) pm me sometime if you wanna play a couple of games or something

I am disappointed with the system they have setup for fleets, especially at lower levels, and the Marks.

The problem with fleets is that Chaos Light Cruisers were notoriously underpowered in TT to the point not many people ran them, plus our escorts were great as cheap as ships so most people ran escorts and Cruisers. BFG Armada has a lot of emphasis on light cruisers but the developers never patched around the issues with the Chaos ships. The result is I have to play super smart and get lucky (e.g. if I don't get your Engines I am buggered).

As for Marks, they don't play the same way TT did. On TT I exclusively used Tzeentch for the dice re-roll per ship per turn, however they wen't with smoke clouds and decoy ships for Tzeentch in this game. They've designed the marks to cover for Chaos weaknesses, rather than extenuate the strengths of the race; they've made Chaos "kitey" but none of the marks give us speed, or longer range, or free warp jumps, or change the direction of an enemy ship etc.

The game itself is beautiful and quite close to the TT I knew and loved (though I do lament the lack of base building), however the Devs should have put more effort into fixing the weaknesses in the TT game they used as reference. Still going to keep playing it because it's still a decent game, but it's nowhere near as good as stated.

I was unlucky that I got into the hobby as BFG was removed as a specialist game, so I cannot truly comment on how well BFG:A reflects the TT, however I would argue that as an entry game it offers stuff for people who have played the TT, and players that (like myself) might not have had the opportunity...

here is me hoping that GW is actually planning to bring a load of the specialist games back to the tabletop (though it is a rumour that I take with a whole bucket of salt)

Yeah rumour was BFG and Blood Bowl were coming back because they both sold well historically and Age of Sigmar is a dive

well if BFG is making  a return then I had better set aside some finances! :D

I wonder whether that would be in the new box set format that GW seems to be loving so much

Old Starter kit was 4x Imp Cruisers, 4x Chaos Cruisers, rulebook, reference sheets x2, measure stick x1, dice, counters, bomber / fighter/ assault / torp tokens and some 2d scenerary. If it has all that again I would be content - the cruisers were multi-model kits, you could make any mix of 4 cruisers for your race.

I  feel like they would probably cut that back a bit, and sell something like 2 cruisers + escorts for each in a box set costing around £100 xD

Usually with specialist games you get quite a bit of stuff though.

We'll see what the future brings - tis the only way they're getting cash off me though
