So with the release of the new space marines DLC, I couldn't help but wonder whether anyone had worked out the best playstyle for them?
My personal stance is as follows:
I initially disliked the space marines, I thought that pound for pound their cruisers were too underpowered, and even eldar armour seemed to make a mockery of them. However, I persuaded myself to give them a chance, and to take a look at what tactics might be effective with them:
- BOARDING - This is the single best feature of the space marine fleets. I suppose that vessels full to the brim with genetically enhanced superkillers should be feared. My play-style with the space marines lends to a heavy emphasis on boarding actions. Thunderhawks, and (once you have the perk installed) boarding torpedoes give the humble space marine cruiser a lot of potential boarding actions.
- SHIELDS - Considering that the lore states that a strike cruisers are more or less designed to simply get the space marines within their target range and then leave, shields are one of the most important upgrades. All of my strike cruisers are outfitted with both the shield recharge perk, and and the invulnerability perk - both of which really help the cruisers survive (especially against close ranged or hard hitting foes)
- FAVOURS - These are not cheap, and considering you can only have one of each it is important to ensure that you spend these perks wisely. I currently have a strike cruiser outfitter with the master of the forge upgrade, which gives the cruiser a new skill per level. This alone has turned the cruiser into a foe that is really hard to take down. The librarian upgrade is next on my list, giving a chance to force a mutiny on a targeted ship - possibly perfect for dealing with any of the hardest hitting elements of an opposing fleet
