The other Night Lords kept a careful eye on the servant of the Omnissiah, never fully trusting him though he had given no sign of dissension. It was his unquestioning support that made them most suspicious. Baek, Nox and Nosk made it their business to check in on the mechanical man whenever they could. No visible fault had been found with the man's work, but it would be a great while before the Astartes would trust the abducted mechanic.
They had used much of the time to get acquainted with their absent brothers. Spuds had stayed to himself, which suited the others fine with the overpowering smell of decay that followed him as sores and welts festered across his body. Priest had also become reclusive lately. He could be seen slinking from the shadows scurrying about the passageways, and it gave rise to concerns about how much the Word Bearer's mind might be slipping away.
D'ex was a stalwart and capable Night Lord, however. The only fault to be found with his character was an overwhelming competitive edge. He and Joker spent hours in training. D'ex proving his capabilities, and Joker venting his anger into something concrete to hold on to his mind. Joker had only slipped a few times resulting in minor injuries in training. Baek was coming along well as an apothecary, making it easier for his brothers to trust his ability in a combat situation.
Othrim had stayed away from the other Night Lords, spending his days on the bridge or in his chambers. Only Nosk went to speak to the Talon Lord, while Nox made it clear that he did not wish to spend time near Othrim. Nosk would make reports to the others on the state of repairs, and lay out Othrim's plans for when they were resupplied. Nox avoided these briefings, preferring to spend the time with the Tech-Adept alone.
"You seem to take a great interest in my work." Malikon chittered as he worked on a complex mess of servos and wires.
"No. I take interest in you." Nox said, stepping forward from the dark edges of the workspace that had been afforded to the Adept.
"You do not trust me." He observed.
"No, I do not." Nox agreed, making his way over to the work table. "You have been with us for awhile, why do you help us?"
"I suppose the answer you want is because you will kill me if I do not." Malikon said, still diligently working on the mess before him. "That is not my reason, however. I serve the Omnissiah. I may best serve him by preserving and aiding the Machine Spirit inherent in all wonders of technology." As he spoke, the Adept looked up at Nox, though the metal limbs protruding from his back continued their work. "This ship is a wonder from an era that is gone. It is an honor to be part of it. Your armor, weapons, all of these are part of my mission. What you do with them is inconsequential. My loyalty is to the Omnissiah, not to the Emperor."
"With such a loyalty we truly cannot trust you. What keeps you loyal to us?" Nox asked.
"Nothing at all." Malikon responded in his metallic voice. "I have as much desire to stay with you, as to depart. Assurance of my loyalty as you put it is entirely dependent upon you denying me a better opportunity."
"What of Yapay?" Nox said, wanting to change the topic from the Adept's surprising forthrightness.
"Your fellow is alive." Malikon said, standing from the table and moving across the workplace. "Though not in the sense you might have wanted. His body was lost. I have managed to fabricate a suitable substance to simulate psychoactive amniotic fluid. Your resources are limited, but I have managed to begin construction of an alternative shell for your brother."
So saying he led Nox out one of the doors to what used to be a storage bay. Where one had been barren walls and scattered debris, now was a vat of liguid with a malformed figure within it. Tubes dotted the figure's skin and connected him to various vats and consoles. It was horrific, but Nox had seen its like before. Near the vat was a massive slab of metal, carefully etched with delicate scroll work and images of the Night Lords. Centered upon it was an intricately designed skull. Other massive metal limbs with the same care and detail lay about the chamber.
"He will be changed, but he shall be mighty." Malikon assured him.
"Do not tell the others." Nox said, nodding before giving the Adept one last look, reading nothing on the mostly machine visage, and departing the chamber.

"Status lieutenant?" Varren asked, surveying the stars.
"Translation successful, on course towards Hydraphur." Came the quick report.
"Excellent." So saying he accessed a private terminal and began to transmit a message on a secure line.
+TRANSMISSION BEGIN CODE A9B54+
ENCOUNTERED EXCOMMUNICATUS TRAITORUS OF THE NIGHT LORDS LEGION IN UHULIS SECTOR OF THE SEGMENTUM PACIFICUS. THREAT NOT PACIFIED. REQUEST ALL RECENT ACTIVITIES MATCHING EXCOMMUNICATUS TRAITORUS NIGHT LORDS PATTERNS.
+INQUISITOR VARREN, END TRANSMISSION+
"Lieutenant you have the bridge." Varren departed and made his way to his chambers to mull over his next course of action. As a member of the Ordo Malleus he could pass this problem off to the Ordo Hereticus, but they had to be in league with the ruinous powers. He frowned as his heavy boot falls resounded off the plasteel floors. They also had his sword. Without it he felt slightly empty inside, and could tell the injury to his face was not healing as fast as it once might have. He would find those traitors, and he would bring the Emperor's justice to them.
Upon reaching his room aboard the Righteous Protector he saw that he had received a message. Opening up the data readout he noticed it was encoded with Imperial protocols. No sooner did he open the message then it started to degrade, before his eyes lines disappeared and the message began to collapse in on itself in a wash of static. He was only able to pick out a few words and phrases before the message was gone, marked corrupted. He had seen the words "traitors" and "Quarred IV." He knew that was a desolate ice planet located inside the Segmentum Obscurus.
"Perhaps the traitors destroyed the message to protect themselves." Varren thought aloud. Believing this to be a golden opportunity he voxed to the bridge for the lieutenant to make immediate preparations to set course for Quarred IV. For them to be able to intercept and destroy an Imperial message with such speed there must be a sizable force in play. He would signal for others to rendezvous at that location. None escape the Emperor's judgement.
**********************************************
Nox burst onto the bridge followed closely by Nosk. As soon as they were through the door Nosk grabbed Nox's arm. The Night Lord quickly tore his arm free.
"What is it?" Othrim asked calmly, keeping his back to the two Night Lords.
"Talon Lord, we intercepted a transmission. It is Imperial in origin mentioning a raid by Night Lord forces. A raid would mean a good number of our brothers."
"It could just as easily be a trap." Nosk chimed in with a sour expression. "We cannot go charging off on limited information. Our last mission to find more of our number nearly cost us all our lives."
"It is a shame that more were not lost." Nox remarked coldly. Nosk's hands balled up and he took a step towards Nox who remained stationary.
"Enough!" Othrim hissed, turning to face his subordinates. "You are supposed to be the backbone of this outfit, not squabbling over petty differences." Nosk snapped to attention at the Talon Lord's words. "The message you picked up was a distress signal from an Imperial world. I have no cause to doubt the validity of the message. The part that intrigues me more is that the message was destroyed." Othrim made his way away from the two Night Lords that stood in silence. "A Night Lord raid would have silenced communications. So this was something else. And once the message got out it would be irrelevant to any of our fallen brothers. Something much bigger is happening on Quarred IV, and I would like to know what."
"As you wish Lord." Nosk said, an edge of resentment in his tone as he and Nox saluted before departing.
"How is Yapay?" Nosk asked Nox once they were outside the bridge.
"He will recover." Nox eyed Nosk carefully. "I am surprised you would ask about him."
"I may not like him, but I will not disrespect his abilities." Nosk responded with what almost seemed like hurt in his voice.
"Understood." As they strode away from the bridge in silence for several moments Nox looked over at the grim faced Nosk. "What do you believe the something bigger Lord Othrim mentioned might be?"
"I do not know." Nosk admitted. "I think we will regret finding out."
***************************************************
"Not bad, not bad." D'ex said with a smirk as he circled Joker. His massive torso bare and covered with sweat. In his hand was a chainblade revving softly. Joker was likewise attired, also holding a chainblade. Joker's long hair hung down in thick sweat soaked ropes, lending an animalistic appearance to his hunched stance. They had been practicing for a good while now, and their blood spattered the ground. D'ex's taunts had been wearing at Joker's patience, which had been leading to the dual effects of Joker's guard lessening, but also his restraint.
"Quit your taunts." Joker spat.
"I am merely commending your progress. You might eventually be as skilled as myself." D'ex laughed. No sooner had he spoken then Joker was moving. With a roar of rage Joker swung across with his blade. D'ex ducked under it to be met with a swift knee that caught him in the jaw. Stumbling backwards Joker did not let up, barreling into the stunned Night Lord slamming him up against the wall of the training cage. D'ex swung a punch into Joker's fused ribs, but Joker grabbed the attacking limb pinning it against his body. With another roar Joker slammed his forehead into D'ex's face. He then tossed D'ex across the chamber and charged, chainsword held high for the kill.
"BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!" He screamed. The killing blow did not come. Instead the familiar rapport of a bolt round being fired sounded, and Joker fell to the ground. He looked at his bleeding leg and then across the way. Nox stood, bolt pistol aimed at him, its barrel smoking.
"I told you there would be no warning." Nox said as he moved to help up D'ex. "You should not anger him, it only makes his rages worse."
"I would have had him." D'ex assured Nox as he was helped up. He looked at Joker who was rising to his feet slowly and painfully, once more himself. "Call it a draw." He offered. Joker only growled.

“His madness may work in our favor.” Yapay chimed in.
"Glory. Right." Yapay chimed in.
"Quite the ride, Nosk." Yapay called. "Think you could get us hit any more?"
A few glancing hits rocked the Stormbird.
"Still doing great, Brother Sergeant." Yapay chided.
"Maybe he has finally gotten himself killed." Yapay offered.
"So we cannot go forward, or backwards." Yapay observed. "Let us go sideways then."
"Not the most subtle tactic." Yapay commented.
"These Imperials are putting up a rather stoic fight." Baek chimed in.
"For mortals perhaps." Yapay countered.
"Very well, brother Chaplain." Yapay said. The title causing Nox to flinch internally, as he knew full well that was Yapay's intent.

Baek was busy in the apothecarium continuing to familiarize himself with his new role as apothecary. Yapay had taught him some of the skills he might need so that Baek could assist, but now he had been given a monumental task with little preparation. He had dutifully taken the task in hand, however, and was performing admirably in his new role. As he inventoried the meager stores on board he realized something curious, vials of chemical compounds were missing. None of the menials would dare steal from the apothecarium, so where could the stores go? Who would take them? Baek settled upon listing what was missing and submitting the list to Nosk. The sergeant would undoubtedly root out who was raiding the supply and for what purpose.
"I would not be surprised if it was that putrescent excuse for a Night Lord to blame." Baek said acidly. Activating his vox he contacted Nosk. "Sergeant, I need word in the apothecarium."
*******************************************
"On my way." Nosk responded into the vox before returning his attention to the marine before him. "Let me get this straight, Nox. You think we should use sorcery?"
"Our brothers are corrupted. Tainted. It stands to reason that it would take another form of sorcery to protect them from further devolution." Nox argued.
"Or perhaps we should have them seek the light of the Emperor." Nosk scoffed back. "They are lost. Our only course of action is to make the best use of them while we can. When they have fallen too far they shall fall by our blades or those of our enemies." His gaze hardened on Nox. "Unlike some others here I will not squander resources based on personal bias and belief." Nox's jaw clenched at the verbal attack.
"When Joker goes to rip out your heart in one of his rages." Nox said in a low cold tone. "Do not expect me to stop him." So saying the Night Lord turned and departed. Nosk cursed under his breath, remembering the days when his word was law, when there was no Chaplain Nox hounding him at every turn.
Deciding not to dwell on it and keep his focus on the mission he made his way to the apothecarium to see what Baek had wanted. When he entered he found Baek taking inventory of the supplies they had aboard. Nosk knew that they did not have enough of anything, the drawback of living this renegade pirate existence. Their steady supplies of everything the ever could have needed gone forever, and now they existed on picking up the scraps they could get their hands on.
"Baek, you wanted something." Nosk said by means of greeting. His tone still bearing some of the bitterness from his conversation with Nox.
"Yes, sergeant." Baek responded. At least there was one Night Lord that still adhered to protocol and remembered their role in the hierarchy. "It would appear that medicinal supplies are missing. I have not administered them, nor have any requisitions been made to me for their use elsewhere."
"I see." Nosk said. "What manner of supplies?"
"Chemical compounds." Baek replied. "Various sedatives, painkillers and psychotropic drugs."
"Understood. I will look into this." Nosk assured Baek as he exited the apothecarium. Now he had a drug thief amongst his ranks. Nosk racked his brain trying to figure out where to start his search. His mind settled on three likely culprits: Priest, Joker and Spuds. Checking his chrono he determined he had time to pursue the matter before they reached Quarred IV.
"Talon Lord." Nosk called over the vox. "I have reason to believe we have a thief in our ranks." Nosk decided to start with Joker.
