Halo 1 begins where Halo: Reach leaves off. The Pillar of Autumn fled the destruction of Reach with Master Chief in stasis. Under the Cole Protocol they made a blind jump (to not lead Covenant to any other human territories) and ended up at Installation 04. They crash land the ship and start a guerilla war against the Covenant.
The Covenant release the Flood from storage and spend the rest of the game trying to prevent the Flood from stealing the Truth and Reconciliation (covenant cruiser) which is on the surface for repairs.
Chief is fooled into activating the Installation by 343 Guilty Spark (aka The Monitor) but Cortana stops it just in time. Chief then disables the installation firing nodes and then detonates the Pillar of Autumn's drive core to destroy the Installation.
Halo 1-2
Chief stole a Longsword Fighter off The Autumn while a few Marines escape in a Pelican. They join up and then manage to steal a Covenant Battleship. They end up meeting up with the rest of Chiefs team and destroy a covenant staging ground before escaping to Earth.
Halo 2
Covenant follow an archeological lead to a Forerunner Cache which just happens to be Earth. Massive battle ensues and a member of the Covenant Triarch "The Prophet of Regret" flees Earth in his Super Carrier which was in-atmo, above New Mombasa (Africa). The jump from in-atmo throws off the jump and they end up at another Installation 05. Priest, Miranda Keys and Johnson follow in UNSC Corvette "In Amber Clad"
Again another Guerilla war to stop "Regret" activating this installation.
Meanwhile the disgraced commander of the station Chief blew up between Halo 1 and 2 is sentenced to death. However is chosen to serve his sentence as The Arbiter, kind of like a holy suicide pact warrior. "Arbiter" leads a strike against heretic Covenant forces in a mining station in the upper atmosphere of the gas giant Installation 04 used to orbit.
Turns out those "heretics" found out the truth from "Spark" who survived the destruction of Installation 04. Arbiter on board High Charity (Covenant ruling cast homeworld which is now a slip-capable asteroid station thing) transitions to Installation 05.
Installation 05 was run by 2401 Penitent Tangent, but the Flood escaped eons ago and are trapped in the Containment Zone. Covenant let them out (again) and Arbiter starts mopping them up while Chief is fighting in there to get the "Index" which is essentially the firing key for the Installation.
Prophet of Truth decides the Elites (Sangheili) know too much and declares them heretics while replacing them with the Brutes. Arbiter and Chief get captured by Gravemind (the sentient hive mind of the Flood) and sent to stop Truth who now has the Index.
Chief ends up on High Charity which is now flood infested thanks to the flood nicking the In Amber Clad. He doesn't find it, but Cortana discovers that the power core of High Charity is a Forerunner dreadnought and they plan to take it to Earth. Cortana stays behind enabling Chief to board it as it takes off. That's the ship you see him fall from in Halo 3.
Meanwhile Arbiter ends up near the firing control room on the surface in the middle of a Civil War (Grunts, Hunter and Elites vs Jackals, Brutes and Drones). He steals a Scarab and follows Tartarus (chieftain of the Brutes) into the firing chamber and alongside Spark, Miranda Keyes and Johnson he kills Tartarus and prevents them firing the Installation. Somehow they make it back to Earth before Chief.

If you haven't played 1 or 2 then you're so far off the story it's not even cool. There's an entire universe - Books, Stories, Short Series', etc. I am a huge fan of the books and have been openly thrilled with the recent ties with the novel lore with the series sponsored by 343 (especially including Spartan 104 - Fred, who is my favorite), as well as the Forerunners/Didact making an appearance in the series after all of this time. They had -best- make the Didact exact or I'm going to rage so hard, the entire planet with rupture.

Halo 2 did have the best multiplayer. Reach had the best maps, weapons, vehicles and gamemodes - but the equipment and static loadout was not as enjoyable as the Halo 2 system of set or random spawn. Equipment also ruined it, especially armour lock

I hope the Kilo 5 team makes an appearance. I like their characters best. We already know that the main Sangheli boss man is from the Kilo 5 trilogy.

Man, I almost forgot about Kilo 5. I read Glasslands as soon as it hit the shelves and then forgot it. I'm going to have to pick it back up. I just want Fred, Linda, and Kelly to make an appearance. I've been waiting on that since day one.
the DMR ruined reach for me just give me a fucking battle rifle an im good to go, you guys know if their writing a book for halo 4
There are no books for the games.

Read "Thursday War" Keiya, it's the sequel to Glasslands. You really start to appreciate Naomi in that one, they put a lot of effort into developing her into a human being rather than just a spartan

The Kilo 5 series covers the events between Halo 3 and Halo 4, but there is no novel yet for Halo 4 itself.

Naomi. <3 Ahh~ I actually enjoyed her in that book and I'm picky over characters. No one can trump my Linda, but dammit Naomi was pretty nifty. She had some very.. Un-Spartan-like habits and quirks in the first one.

That series is absolutely fantastic. There is so much clarity and understanding. I prefer it over the others so far. I have first the second. Not sure if Greg Bear has released the third yet, but holy good damn are they amazing. So many mind-twists about things you thought you knew.

No I am content with the Forerunner mysticism that the Halo series has had to date. Might change my stance after Halo 4-6 though.
For example, Mass Effect had that Prothean mysticism going on and in ME3 they released the Prothean guy who's attitude, stories and cutscenes humanised them. It was very well done, I just didn't like it as much.

I don't have time or the funds to pick up copies of halos 1 and 2 but ill definitely put them at the top of my list for games to get soon.
Get Halo Anniversary instead. Halo 1 with Halo Reach graphics. No rush, they were the best of the series (so far) but they are not going anywhere

These books don't do that at all. You basically look at them in a completely profound light. It's very nice. I didn't enjoy the Prothean in ME3 - but being able to reflect on the Forerunners is very, very nice. He did very well with it.
