So for the first time I'm playing the halo 4 campaign on legendary, but I need a more efficient way for killing knights because all I can do is snipe them from afar but that eats up my ammo. Any suggestions?

Marksman weapons to the head is the only reliable and sustainable way to kill them. Obviously superweapons such as the Railgun or Inferno-Cannon is better but you don't get them often.

Some people find Plasma Pistol and then Headshot works wonders, problem is that there are a few levels without Plasma Pistols around. You could try the Insta-Kill Bolt Shot when a shotgun isn't available

Arghh I hate those guys. So when I did my run on lgnd I found this:

Bolt shot does nothing.
The only weapon which 1hitkos them is the incineration cannon
The light rifle is quite effective
Railgun will take down their shields you just need to shot em before they teleport
Shot guns take roughly 4 shots.
Any Spraying weapon. Is god when close range.
Not Sure about head shots. They are the only thing I couldnt headshot in story.

Your best bet is to kill everyone else first.

Double shot em with the bolt shot, make sure all of the crawlers and watchers are dead first tho and stay a good 5ft away from it if you get any closer it will one hit you in close combat or dual gernade it the shoot it in the face

every knight drops pulse grenades take as many as you can, then find a suppressor and a light rifle (pretty common around the maps when your facing Prometheans) us the grenades to get them out of cover and to drop their sheilds pretty badly then use the suppressor to finish of the rest of the shields protecting them, then using the light rifle aim for the face of the Knight trying to get a head shot, it drops them almost every time, but the most effective way that i have found is the bolt pistol charged shot twice to their face. it kills them every time.

i just beat it solo on legendary and for the smg type weapons show no fear and charge worked for me in a 1v1 situation just be ready to jump if the knight has a inferno cannon make sure you have the shield block and run its all about the range
